About Acne

Acne vulgaris, commonly known as acne, is an inflammatory eruption of the oil glands of the face, chest and back. Although it is mostly encountered in the teenage years, it may persist well into the late thirties and nearly 85% of all people have treatable acne at some point in their lives. The exact cause of acne is unknown, but it is thought to be an overproduction of oil production (sebum) and an overgrowth of the bacteria, Propionibacterium acnes. In addition, heredity, hormones, menstruation and emotional stress appear to worsen acne. Foods, such as greasy food and chocolate, do not cause acne but may make existing acne worse.

Acne begins in puberty and affects the youth and adults in various adverse ways. Not only is acne unpleasant for others to look at, it can be extremely tender and bothersome. Many teenagers and adults experience the psychological damage of acne resulting in personality changes, in addition to the long term physical effects. Deeper acne, especially the cystic type, causes long lasting scarring of the face and trunk. It is vital and you get your acne treated without delay so as to minimize permanent scarring, poor self-image, depression and anxiety.

How We Treat Acne

At Advanced Dermatology & Laser Center of Redlands, we have an aggressive approach to treating acne using the latest technology. Early acne lesions of black heads and pustules are treated with topicals including benzoyl peroxide, azelaid acid and tretinoin. We add oral antibiotics to moderate acne displaying inflamed papules and pustules.

If the patient is not responding adequately, we consider the use of oral Isotretinoin (Accutane, Amensteen, Sotret, Claravis) in order to eradicate cystic lesions within several months. In addition, we utilize adjunct modalities for recalcitrant cases by the concurrent use of PDT (Photodynamic Light Therapy), IPL (Intense Pulsed Light), and Microdermabrasion.

Acne Scarring

For those wishing improvement of acne pitted scars, we offer Lumenis Deep Fx fractinal laser resurfacing, dermabrasion, chemical peels, skin fillers.

Since acne scars are unique in their appearance, patients should not waste precious time on ineffective therapy but should consult with their dermatologist to determine an individualized therapy plan for a most successful result.
