Is Laser Hair Removal for you?
This determination can best be achieved through a consultation with our dermatologist. We will take the time to educate you about honest, realistic expectations.

Our specialists will evaluate the area to be treated, your type of hair growth, skin sensitivity, previous hair removal methods, and underlying causes (i.e. hereditary, hormonal, medications) and discuss at length your individual needs.

What is it and how does it work?
Laser systems emit a gentle beam of light that passes through the skin to the hair follicle. The hair absorbs it, the energy from the laser is transformed into heat and the hair follicle is disabled.

Who is a Candidate for Laser Hair Removal?
The hair must be darker than the surrounding skin. Light skin with dark hair responds best. Persons with dark, coarse hair are the easiest to treat as dark hair contains melanin. Melanin is a dark pigment which attracts the laser light so more laser energy is absorbed. This results in needing fewer sessions.

Light colored, blonde, and red hair are more difficult to treat and blonde and red hair are very difficult to treat requiring multiple sessions with varied results.

How many sessions does it take to achieve the best results?
On average, most people require six session before they retrieve optimal results. It takes multiple sessions because laser hair removal systems are most effective on hair follicles that are in the "anagen" growth stage. On a particular area of the skin, some of the hair follicles are in the anagen stage, while other follicles are in the "catagen" changing stage, or "telogen" resting stage.

You may see approximately 10-to-25 percent reduction in the growth of the hair from each appropriately spaced treatment. The results will depend upon many factors including how dark your skin is, the texture and color of the hair, the growth phase of the hair follicle, and your body’s response to the laser. Generally, we can use a higher amount of energy on lighter areas of the skin for a more effective treatment and a lower level or different laser on darker areas. Your safety, health, and comfort will be our most important concerns.

Am I a good candidate for laser hair removal?
We have a variety of advanced lasers that are suited for different skin types. Laser treatment is most effective treating course, dark hair on light skin types. However, we also offer laser treatments that can be effective treating dark hair on darker skin types.

We will evaluate you on the first visit to determine which of our lasers are most appropriate for you. We will also discuss a treatment plan that will work best for your skin type, hair type, location, and your availability for treatment sessions.

How long should I wait between laser hair removal sessions?
You should anticipate scheduling the first treatments approximately 6-to-8 weeks apart. For best results, you should schedule your appointment based upon how quickly your hair grows in the area-to-be-treated.

After laser hair removal treatment, the "dead" hairs that were treated will eventually rise from the follicle and shed off your body. You should schedule your appointment approximately three weeks after your skin has shed all the "dead" hairs that remain in the follicles from the previous treatment. It may take two-to-three weeks for your skin to shed these "dead" hairs.

What should I do prior to receiving a laser hair removal treatment session?
Foremost, you should avoid darkening your skin type. You should avoid exposure to either the sun or tanning devices on the area-to-be-treated. You should also not have used any chemical skin darkeners in the last two months. The laser hair removal treatment will be most effective for you when your skin is its lightest.

You should also stop any waxing or electrolysis at least four weeks prior to the treatment. Waxing can stall the hair from entering the "anagen" growth phase which could reduce the efficacy of the laser hair removal treatment.

You should shave the area 1-to-3 days prior to the laser hair removal treatment, depending upon how active your hair follicles are in the area-to-be-treated. We can provide you with the best treatment if there is a very slight stubble of growth that is just barely visible on close inspection. Thus, if your hair grows quickly in the area, then you should shave the area one day prior to the treatment so there is a barely visible amount of stubble growth. For slower-growing areas, you should shave earlier than one day prior to treatment, depending on your hair growth.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

The Food and Drug Administration approves the use of lasers for permanent hair reduction. Your results will depend upon your own body, your skin type, and the timing of your hair removal treatments with your hair growth. We use advanced lasers which can provide the best results for permanent hair reduction.

After six or more treatments, you may still have a few rogue hairs that appear to grow in the area. For these areas, you can schedule a spot treatment with our smaller-tipped laser or seek to have electrolysis treatments on the individual hair follicles.

Is laser hair removal painful?
You may experience some discomfort during the procedure, depending upon the laser that we use, the energy setting, and your skin's sensitivity. Our larger-tipped laser may reduce the amount of discomfort that you feel because it vacuums and stretches the skin so that your skin feels the stretching feeling rather than the laser's pulse. Also, the larger-tipped laser reduces the discomfort because it reduces the amount of time that each laser session takes to complete. Our smaller-tipped laser may also reduce the amount of discomfort that you feel because it has a ChillTip continuous contact cooling.

Some patients feel no discomfort at all when receiving the laser hair removal treatments. Other patients have described the treatment as similar to being stricken by a rubber band. You should discuss your sensitivity with us prior to and during the treatments. We may be able to reduce the discomfort through numbing creams or other remedies.

Are there any side effects to laser hair removal?
After the treatment, you may have some redness, swelling, itchiness, or discomfort in the area treated. You may also feel a sensation in the treated area that is similar to a sunburn or slight burn. These side-effects usually reduce dramatically within 24 hours, but please contact us if the swelling or discomfort increases after 12 hours or does not dissipate after 3 days.

In some situations, you may experience hyper- or hypo-pigmentation. Hyper-pigmentation occurs when the skin becomes darker than the surrounding skin. Hypo-pigmentation occurs when the skin becomes lighter than the surrounding skin. These conditions are usually temporary. You should tell us about any changes in skin color on your next visit so that we can adjust the laser’s energy setting to suit your skin’s sensitivity.

On rare occasions, you may experience scabbing, bruising, infection, or other skin discolorations. If any of these side effects are present after 3 days, then you should contact our office for follow-up treatments.
